On a sunny day in July, Clare Prentice arrives in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Although she is on assignment to interview the town's notoriously reclusive novelist Nate Hanssen, Clare is really in search of a different story - her story. Just months before, Clare was a bride-to-be, living in Chicago and looking to the future - until the day she learned her entire life had been a lie. Not only was Clare adopted, but there is no record that she or her adoptive mother ever existed. The only clue is a class ring from Grand Rapids Senior High School.

Unable to get on with her future until she reconciles her past, Clare breaks off her engagement. Unraveling the mystery is like trying to sculpt fog - until the first piece of the puzzle unexpectedly drops into place Clare's birth mother, Lily Gundersen, was murdered in Grand Rapids. Lily's murder was one of the most talked-about events in the town's history, but no one is talking now. Clare doesn't know the whole story - and someone intends to keep it that way.

Conspiracy of Silence (Audible Audio Edition) Martha Powers Becky Boyd Oceanview Publishing Books

Conspiracy of Silence is a murder mystery with a new romance thrown in.

The characters are wonderfully drawn. The events, food, and culture bring character to the story, telling us a bit about the area. Bed-racing? Now that sounds interesting.

Most of the mystery itself was solid. What was up with Olli and his sister's strange relationship? The ending was a bit unfinished.

It's when the romance is introduced that brings about a change to the story from decent to less-than. While some readers like detail, I don't happen to be one of them. Unless the details help the reader understand the story. Details of patching up a dog's boo-boo or an adult's is, well, too much detail which bogs down an otherwise good story.

And you know? That's just my opinion.

Conspiracy of Silence (Audible Audio Edition) Martha Powers Becky Boyd Oceanview Publishing Books Reviews

This story is so poorly written and so predictable. Clare knowing she is in danger runs off to face the villain time and again. Truly the worse book I have ever read
A good book about Clare, a young woman who accidentally discovers that she was adopted and begins to search find her real mother. The setting is Grand Rapids Minnesota, a small town where from the very beginning you realize there are deep secrets. Almost immediately she learns about the senseless murder of young woman by her husband. Their 4 year old daughter turns out to be Clare. The remainder of the book follows her quest to understand what really happened so many years ago. It's a well told story with twists, turns, a loyal dog and a budding romance. I agree with some reviews that note the inclusion of rambling details in the narrative. But for me this makes a more complete story.
Some stories, especially mysteries, get you thinking about half way through, who done it. The culprit is not someone introduced at the 11th hour, but usually the most unlikely member of the cast.

Here we have a narrator who finds out, as an adult, that she was adopted. She not only wants to find out who her mother was, but also why her father murdered the woman.

She has only her own childhood dreams to lead her to the answers, but there are twists and turns she, and the reader, never foresee.

The culprit is a surprise, yet logical solution. But what we get along the way is an even more powerful back-story. What it means to be a girl, how a father is a father―not only in her case but also for the daughter of a man, Nate, she becomes close friends with.

I have to tell you I was turning pages right until the end. The title (though appropriate) didn’t grab me, but the roller coaster of a story sure did. -J.Lehman, RosebudBookReviews.com
It is such a relief to get great mystery, subtle clues that require real intelligence and not just dumb luck in a captivating novel that exposes all kinds of human emotion without super-powered, fantasy heroics, plus the bonus that there is no smut or immorality, plus no foul language! I thank the author and look forward to more (dialogue-driven, for sure) reading from this author.
Overall, interesting and entertaining, with building suspense as the story develops. The relationship part was a little too predictable, but the mystery from the past had some good twists.
Not so great on motive, etc -- as is common in murder and suspense stories, that is manipulated to serve the plot...
Dragged a little at times, but maybe that was my mood -- it did keep me up too late reading!
I would say the author needs to work on developing people with more depth. She has the plotting down.
This book has a unique storyline. It also flowed quite nicely. There was enough suspense to keep it interesting , but it wasn't filled with too many twists and clues as to make it confusing. The characters were like able. None really stood out or had any above average abilities, nor did anyone have any serious character flaws, well, until the end. Though someone does die, it is not a murder mystery.

A few minor flaws kept this from being a 4 star book. Every chapter ends with a short sentence or paragraph that comes from out of the blue to pique the readers interest for the next chapter. This sounds like a technique one would find in a creative writing class at adult education. The other technique I didn't care for was using snippets of an old recurring dream to provide some psychological suspense. Personally, I find this a simplistic method to provide intrigue when style fails the author. The ending was contrived but acceptable, but if I told you why, you'd guess the ending.

Except for those few defects, I found this to be very readable. If you like a mystery that has a good practical story and flows nicely, that has characters that you can relate too, then. I would recommend this book.
I found myself racing through this book for two reasons the plot was truly compelling, and the dialogue was truly bad. Nobody talks like that. The dialogue was so stilted that it made me cringe, so I read just enough of that to see what was going on and tried to focus on the action so I could figure out why nobody wanted to talk about what happened twenty-some-odd-years ago. The author repeated the expression “conspiracy of silence” far too many times. We get it, we get it. Powers has the ability to construct a good plot; she just needs to find out how to write dialogue that sounds natural.
